FPIS ACTIVITIES AT A REGISTERED WAREHOUSE

Conduct of Arrival Check-Test
The Manager by application informs the Federal Produce Inspection Service (FPIS) of desire to bring produce into the registered warehouse. The FPIS officer inspects the bags of produce with intent to cross check information in waybill, marking, seal No., weight etc. on arrival to detect evidence of initial grading by the state produce inspection services and tampering on transit. By so doing stolen produce can be identified, License Buying Agents (LBAs) activities can be checkmated and Exporter advised as need arises. Officer gives instruction for stacking on dunnage’s or wooden pallet as he takes his produce sample and conduct quality test.

Samples from Arrival Check-Test are sent to Laboratory for certain specific quality parameter that could be determined only through laboratory analysis.

During shipment a Pre-shipment Check-Test
Samples are collected through scooping of each bag, after the bags are led in Lots of 100 bags each. Depending on the type of test, some for cut analysis to detect the quality parameter standard of that produce before approval is given for shipment.

Fumigation of Agricultural Commodities for Export
Fumigation is the process of getting rid of pest in all Agricultural produce. It could be done in the warehouse periodically to control pest in stored produce or prior to shipment during export. Pest infestation in stored produce is detected through a test procedure called snacking. The law requires that all Agricultural produce for exports must be fumigated within 21 days before it is stuff for exports. The fumigation process that the produce be covered with a fumigation sheet for 12 hours after placing the fumigant inside and end of sheets pressed down with sandbags to ensure it’s airtight. A confirmation snaking test is carried out after offs heating at the end of covering for 72 hours to confirm effectiveness of fumigation process. The produce is then released or rejected for export.

Rejection of Poor Quality Produce for Export
After series of pre-shipment cut test and quality parameter like moisture content, etc. are established, if the produce did not meet Export Standard required, it is rejected depending on the type of defect detected.
